"If you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you can possibly imagine." -Ben Kenobi
Reader's Journal
I grew up on the original Star Wars trilogy, so finally getting a chance to read the books was just as thrilling as the books themselves. Reading is one of my favorite activities, but I hardly have the time in a normal day to sit down and relish a chapter or two. Because of this my favorite activity in school, by far, is open reading time.
Often in class I would read much longer than we were given time-wise. Because of this I nearly made it through Return of the Jedi before the end of the school year. I look fareward to quickly finishing it after exams.
As far as thoughts while reading, I often contrasted the differences between the films and the books. And, as always, the book has more room for directly stated description. I especially took note of two particular things:
1. Master Yoda is blue in A New Hope and green in the rest of the books
2. Luke force choked a gamorrean guard while entering Jabba's palace to free Han Solo. This just surprised me. I think about it often.
I disliked some of the word choice within the text. I really really really dislike the word "awesome", especially when it is used in science fiction novels. I also dislikes that it referred to C3P0 as
"seethreepeo" or something to that effect. And one more thing: I don't like Chewbacca's dialog. In A New Hope Chewie's dialog was spoken through repetition of Han, ect. In Empire and Jedi
he has dialog like this: "hhraaaaawrg".
I hate that.
Star Wars: A New Hope, is a thoroughly enjoyable book. It has strong themes of growing into adulthood, which can be easily taken away by any reader. It is not hard to read in the slightest, and while my copy may seem daunting, that is only because it includes all three books. A single book is only about 220 pages.
